WHAT IS A LABRADOODLE?

It's a Labrador mixed with a poodle of course.  The Labradoodle originated in Australia in 1989.  The GDAV (Guide Dog Association Victoria) had a request for a guide dog for an individual who's husband had allergies. The goal was to create an allergy friendly dog with the temperment and trainability to successfully function as a guide dog.  Their first litter was bred between a poodle and lab.  Out of their three puppies one tested allergy friendly and proved to be a successful guide dog and companion.  This was the beginning of the Labradoodle breed.

There are different kinds of Labradoodles:

F1 or First Cross:
This is the result of breeding a pure bred poodle with a pure bred Labrador. The coats on this first generation labradoodle differ wildly. These coats can range from non/light shedding to heavy shedding.  There is really no way to determine what coat qualities will be in these dogs when they are bred. This is why we choose not to breed the First Cross generation labradoodle.

F1B:
This is a First Cross labradoodle bred back to a pure bred poodle.  Breeding back to a poodle ensures more of the desirable coat qualities. These dogs can be non shedding to moderate shedding. They will have fleece or wool coats.

Multi-Gen:
This is an F1B labradoodle bred with another F1B labradoodle.  The result is  most likely a non shedding to light shedding dog, with the highest chance of having a non-allergenic  coat. These will be fleece or wool coats.

COATS:

  • Fleece:  Soft to the touch coat. This coat appears loosely curled and  requires daily brushing if kept long. Can be kept short to reduce required grooming. May be non-shedding to light shedding. Allergy friendly.
  • Wool:  More dense texture than fleece coat.  Will feel and curl similar to a poodle coat, although curls may hang more loosely in some.  Will require daily brushing to avoid matting. Coats can be kept short to reduce required grooming.
  • Hair Coat:  May be fairly straight to wavy in texture and vary in thickness and length.  Shedding will vary, light to heavy. These require little grooming. Not typically allergy friendly.
Likely to see coat changes from puppy to adult coats. This means that it is difficult to determine what coat your puppy will have when it is an adult dog.  Unfortunately, there are no guarantees that your puppies "coat type" will remain the same. Your puppy will require grooming during this transition to avoid matting.
